Helping Children and Teens Feel Safe, Supported, and Understood
Watching your child struggle emotionally can be one of the hardest things to face as a parent. You may notice changes in their mood, behavior, confidence, friendships, school performance, or the way they respond to stress. Maybe they are having bigger reactions than usual. Maybe they are pulling away. Maybe they seem anxious, sad, angry, overwhelmed, or just not like themselves.
You do not have to figure it out alone.
At Your Journey Counseling and Wellness, we provide therapy and counseling for children and adolescents in a warm, supportive environment where they can feel safe expressing what they may not know how to say out loud. Our therapists use age-appropriate approaches to help children and teens understand their emotions, build coping skills, strengthen confidence, and work through the challenges they are facing.
Therapy gives your child a space that is just for them, while also helping your family feel more supported, informed, and hopeful.
How Can Therapy for Children and Teens Help?
Children and teens do not always know how to explain what they are feeling. Sometimes emotional stress shows up as irritability, worry, sadness, behavior changes, withdrawal, defiance, trouble sleeping, school struggles, or difficulty getting along with others.
Therapy provides a safe and supportive space to better understand what is going on beneath the surface. Here are some ways therapy can help:
- Understand emotions: Help your child recognize, name, and express their feelings in healthier ways.
- Develop coping skills: Teach practical tools for managing worry, sadness, anger, frustration, and stress.
- Improve behavior: Support children who are struggling with emotional outbursts, impulse control, or challenging behaviors.
- Build confidence: Help children and teens strengthen self-esteem and feel more secure in who they are.
- Navigate friendships and peer pressure: Support adolescents as they work through social challenges, boundaries, and fitting in.
- Strengthen communication: Help children and teens learn how to share what they need in a more productive way.
- Support the whole family: Give parents insight, guidance, and support as their child works through difficult emotions.
Therapy is not about “fixing” your child. It is about helping them feel heard, supported, and better equipped to handle life’s challenges.
Counseling for Children Ages 6–10
Children between the ages of 6 and 10 are still learning how to understand their feelings, communicate their needs, and manage big emotions. When something feels overwhelming, they may not have the words to explain it. Instead, parents may see changes in behavior, increased frustration, clinginess, worry, sadness, trouble at school, or difficulty following directions.
Our therapists provide a safe, welcoming space where children can express themselves in ways that feel natural for their age. Through age-appropriate counseling techniques, we help children build emotional awareness, practice coping skills, and learn healthier ways to respond when they feel upset or overwhelmed.
Therapy for children ages 6–10 can help with:
- Big emotions or frequent emotional outbursts
- Anxiety, worry, or fears
- Sadness or withdrawal
- Behavioral concerns at home or school
- Difficulty adjusting to change
- Trouble with friendships
- Low confidence or negative self-talk
Stress related to family changes, grief, or transitions - Learning how to calm down and communicate needs
Our goal is to help your child feel safe enough to open up, supported enough to grow, and confident enough to use new skills in everyday life.
Therapy for Adolescents Ages 11–18
The adolescent years can bring a lot of emotional pressure. Teens are navigating school stress, friendships, identity, social media, peer pressure, family expectations, self-esteem, and the transition from childhood into young adulthood.
Sometimes teens talk openly about what they are going through. Other times, they shut down, become irritable, isolate, seem anxious, lose motivation, or struggle to manage emotions. As a parent, it can be hard to know how to help without pushing them further away.
At Your Journey Counseling and Wellness, our therapists create a trusting, respectful space where adolescents can talk honestly and feel supported without judgment. We help teens work through anxiety, depression, peer pressure, self-esteem concerns, stress, relationship challenges, and the emotional ups and downs that can come with this stage of life.
Therapy for adolescents ages 11–18 can help with:
- Anxiety, stress, or racing thoughts
- Depression, sadness, or loss of motivation
- Peer pressure and social challenges
- Self-esteem and body image concerns
- School pressure or academic stress
- Family conflict or communication struggles
- Emotional regulation and coping skills
- Identity, confidence, and personal growth
- Feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or misunderstood
Our therapists work to build trust with your teen while also supporting healthier communication, stronger coping skills, and a better sense of emotional balance.
Our Approach to Child and Teen Therapy
At Your Journey Counseling and Wellness, we understand that every child, teen, and family is different. That’s why we take a personalized approach to therapy. Your therapist will take the time to understand your child’s personality, concerns, strengths, family dynamics, and goals for care.
Our therapists create a warm and non-judgmental environment where children and adolescents can feel safe being themselves. Depending on your child’s age and needs, therapy may include emotional expression, coping skill development, mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, family support, communication tools, and other evidence-based approaches.
We believe the relationship between therapist and client matters. Children and teens need to feel comfortable with the person they are talking to. Parents need to feel confident that their child is in caring, capable hands. We are here to support both.
What to Expect in Child and Teen Therapy
Your child’s therapy journey starts with understanding what brought your family in and what you hope will feel different. During the first sessions, your therapist will get to know your child or teen, listen to your concerns, and begin identifying the best path forward.
For younger children, therapy may include creative, age-appropriate ways to help them express emotions and practice new skills. For adolescents, therapy may involve more conversation, reflection, coping strategies, and support around the specific challenges they are facing.
Parents may also be included when helpful, especially when your child needs extra support using new skills at home, school, or in relationships. Your therapist will help guide the process in a way that respects your child’s privacy while also keeping parents informed and supported.
Together, we will create a plan that helps your child build confidence, manage emotions, improve communication, and feel more supported in daily life.
We know! It’s hard to pick.
