EMDR
Sometimes painful memories do not feel like they are in the past.
You may know that something is over, but your body, emotions, or thoughts still react as if it is happening right now. You may feel anxious, guarded, overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in patterns you do not fully understand. That is where Eye Movement
Desensitization and Reprocessing, also known as EMDR, can help.
EMDR therapy is a structured approach that helps the brain process distressing memories, traumatic experiences, and painful emotions in a healthier way. It is often used for trauma and PTSD, but it can also support people dealing with anxiety, panic, grief, difficult childhood experiences, negative beliefs about themselves, or emotional distress tied to life events.
You do not have to keep carrying what happened to you alone.
How Can EMDR Therapy Help?
EMDR therapy provides a safe and supportive space to work through painful experiences at your own pace. Here are some ways EMDR therapy can help:
- Process trauma: Work through distressing memories without having to relive every detail out loud.
- Reduce emotional triggers: Help lower the intensity of reminders, flashbacks, anxiety, or body reactions connected to past experiences.
- Shift negative beliefs: Address thoughts like “I’m not safe,” “It was my fault,” or “I’m not enough” and begin building healthier beliefs.
- Improve emotional regulation: Learn grounding tools to help you feel more steady, present, and in control.
- Support healing after difficult experiences: EMDR may help with trauma, grief, anxiety, panic, relationship wounds, and other distressing life events.
- Reconnect with yourself: Move toward feeling more confident, calm, and able to live in the present.
Our Approach to EMDR Therapy
At Your Journey Counseling and Wellness, we understand that trauma and emotional pain can affect everyone differently. Our therapists take a personalized and compassionate approach, making sure that therapy moves at a pace that feels safe and supportive for you.
EMDR therapy is not about forcing you to talk about everything before you are ready. It is about helping your mind and body process what feels stuck, while also building the coping skills you need to feel grounded along the way.
Your therapist will work with you to understand your history, your symptoms, your goals, and what you hope will feel different in your life. Together, you will create a plan that supports your healing and respects your comfort level.
What to Expect in EMDR Therapy
Your first sessions will focus on getting to know you, understanding what brings you to therapy, and identifying the experiences or symptoms you want to work on. Before beginning EMDR processing, your therapist will help you build tools for grounding, calming your nervous system, and managing emotions that may come up.
During EMDR, your therapist may guide you through sets of eye movements, tapping, or other forms of bilateral stimulation while you briefly focus on a memory, feeling, or belief. You remain in control throughout the process, and your therapist will check in with you along the way.
EMDR therapy is collaborative. You and your therapist will work together to decide what feels helpful, what needs more support, and how to move toward healing one step at a time.
